Every piece leaves the studio with the hardware it needs and a paper template that marks every hole. Here is the whole job, wall by wall.
What’s in the box
Small pieces (20–40 cm): two screws and wall plugs, with keyhole slots or drilled holes in the steel. Medium and large pieces (50–110 cm): standoff bolts — a threaded barrel that screws into a wall plug and a cap that holds the steel 15 mm off the wall. That gap is deliberate: it is what throws the shadow. Also in the box: a full-size paper template with the holes marked, and a one-page instruction sheet.
Step by step
- Decide the height. The centre of the piece at about 150–155 cm from the floor, or 20–25 cm above the top of the furniture beneath it.
- Tape the template to the wall with masking tape. Check it with a spirit level — a slightly crooked template becomes a very crooked piece.
- Drill through the marked holes with the bit size printed on the template. Remove the template.
- Fit the plugs (drywall anchors or masonry plugs, both included where needed).
- Small pieces: drive the screws, leaving 3 mm proud, and hang the piece on them. Large pieces: screw the standoff barrels in, offer the piece up, and tighten the caps through the holes in the steel.
By wall type
Drywall / plasterboard: use the anchors included; for pieces over 80 cm try to hit a stud for at least one hole. Brick, block, concrete: masonry bit and the plugs included; drill slowly. Plaster on lath (older houses): drill without hammer action to avoid cracking the plaster. Wood panelling or fence: screw straight in, no plugs needed. Tile: tile bit, no hammer, tape an X over the spot first.
Outdoors
Use the standoff bolts even for medium sizes — the gap lets rain run off behind the piece. Stainless or coated screws only. Rinse the piece with water twice a year.
Sets
The template shows all panels and the gap between them. Hang the centre or the left panel first, then work outward, checking the level at each panel.
