Metal wall art above the sofa

The wall above a sofa is where most metal wall art ends up, and it is also where most of it is the wrong size. Here is the arithmetic, the heights, and what changes when the piece is cut steel rather than a framed print.

The width: two thirds of the sofa

A piece above a sofa should span roughly two thirds of the sofa’s width. Not the wall’s width — the sofa’s. The sofa is what the eye measures against, and a piece sized to the wall will look marooned above a three-seater in the middle of it.

The numbers, for the sofas people actually own:

  • Two-seater, about 160 cm (63 in) — a piece 100–110 cm wide. Our 100×110 size, the largest we cut, is made for exactly this and for anything wider.
  • Three-seater, about 200–220 cm (79–87 in) — 130–150 cm of span. That is past a single piece, so this is where a multi-panel set earns its place: three 50 cm panels with 10 cm gaps span 170 cm.
  • Corner or modular sofa — measure only the straight run you are hanging above, not the whole footprint.

Two thirds is a floor, not a ceiling. Going slightly wider than two thirds almost always looks considered. Going narrower almost always looks like an accident.

The height: 20–25 cm above the back

Leave 20–25 cm (8–10 in) between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the piece. Less and it looks like it is resting on the furniture; more and the two stop reading as one arrangement and you get a gap of dead wall in between.

The usual gallery advice — centre at 145 cm from the floor — is for an empty wall. Above furniture it produces a piece hung too high. Use the sofa, not the floor.

Why steel changes the numbers

A framed print is a solid rectangle: every centimetre of its stated size is filled. A laser-cut steel silhouette is mostly wall. The stated size is the bounding box, and the actual visual mass might be half of it.

The practical consequence: size up. A 70 cm framed canvas and a 70 cm cut-steel piece do not occupy the same amount of wall to the eye. If you are replacing a print with steel, take one step up the ladder from what the print measured. This is the single most common reason people wish they had ordered larger, and the reason our size guide says the same thing in a different way.

The effect is strongest with open, linear designs — a single-line figure, a mountain horizon, a minimal leaf. It is weakest with dense designs like the geometric abstracts, which read closer to their stated size.

Landscape or portrait

Above a sofa, landscape, nearly always. A horizontal piece echoes the horizontal of the furniture; a tall piece above a long sofa leaves two dead corners.

The exception is a narrow wall — a sofa tucked into an alcove, or one with a floor lamp at each end. There a single tall piece such as the stacked arcs or forest trees can work, because the wall itself is portrait.

Our widest designs are the ocean horizon, the mountain landscape and the Last Supper — all cut specifically to carry a sofa wall.

Which finish above a sofa

Look at what the sofa is doing to the light. A pale sofa against a pale wall gives a black piece maximum contrast and is the safest choice. A dark sofa against a dark wall swallows black entirely — that is where white, gold or bronze earns its place. A room with a lot of warm wood takes bronze better than silver.

One more thing specific to sofas: you will see this piece mostly while sitting, from three or four metres away, often with a lamp beside it. The 15 mm standoff we hang every medium and large piece on is what gives you the shadow at that distance. It is why the piece does not look flat from the sofa.

Before you order

Cut a rectangle of newspaper or a cardboard box to the size you are considering, tape it to the wall, and sit down on the sofa. Two minutes, and it settles the question better than any rule here. Then check the span in the size guide and order that size.

Every piece is cut to order in 3–5 business days and arrives with hanging hardware and a full-size paper template — see how to hang metal wall art for the wall types.
